Tree Dressing

This year's tree dressing event was held in Telemann Square on Friday 5th December. Organised by the Greenwich Food Co-op, New Horizons and Thomas Tallis School, participants created lanterns in the shape of fruit and vegetables to promote healthy lifestyles and paraded through the Ferrier Estate to the accompaniment of the Bollywood Brass Band. Emergency Exit Arts created a brilliant firework display and everyone was treated to Rosa's fabulous soup in the Community Centre at the end of the proceedings. We are already planning an even bigger and better event for next year.

Berkeley Homes office opens to the public

On Wednesday 23rd July, Berkeley Homes opened their offices at the old Meadowside Leisure Centre to the general public. Inside is an exhibition about the redevelopment of the Ferrier Estate, including Thomas Tallis School. The building has been clad in corrugated metal sheets and security measures are strict to say the least. Nevertheless, it's good to see evidence of imminent activity. Hoardings have gone up across the estate with details of yet further meetings with regard to achieving planning permission. The contrast between the huge new signs and the old maps of the estate (long since rendered indecipherable by graffiti) is poignant.

Kidbrooke Carnival and the Talent Tent

Here are a few images from today's Kidbrooke Carnival which featured the Scrap Kingdom Party. Artists from Taru, supported by a grant from the Arts Council and Thomas Tallis School, worked with several local schools and community groups for three weeks to create carnival costumes, samba drums and recycling monsters. Today, the various groups met in Sutcliffe Park where the parade began at midday. Winding its way through the Ferrier Estate, collecting local residents along the way, the parade eventually arrived in Telemann Square where the crowd and participants were treated to drumming and dancing, fresh fruit, a welcome drink and capoeira. Art4Kidbrooke was represented by the Talent Tent. Here, local people could offer their views of the Art4Kidbrooke project, nominate a talent and register their contact details so that we can continue to provide activities and events that respond to local people's needs. The day was a huge success thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of the artists and participants.

Saturday 8th March Event

On Saturday 8^th March we carried out the second event in the old bank on Telemann Square on the Ferrier Estate. There were many activities going on for all ages. At the entrance of the bank we had 'dream balloons' where people could write their dreams and ambitions for the future. We showcased community art proposals from Thomas Tallis School students and people voted for the one they liked most. As well we had a forest of thought bubbles displaying suggestions and ideas that residents and community groups have been sharing with us since October last year. It was an afternoon for reflecting about the future and having fun. There were kids activities, dancing and drumming with Taru and the Dancin' Angels. There was time to think about the past with a talk by resident Doreen Kendrick about the history of the Estate and other contributions by other people who live on the Ferrier. There was also a video diary room where people spoke about their homes and shared their thoughts on 'ideal communities' and a screening of 'The Phantom of the Ferrier', a short film we made with a group of young people living on the estate.

Ferrier Estate

Stands for Togetherness in Gambian-Wolof language. The project was set up in 1993 after the murder of young Stephen Lawrence in 1993 on Well Road, a mile and a half away from the Ferrier Estate. The aim of the project was to provide counseling support or referrals to victims of racial harassment with bias to families of African and African Caribbean's in the Ferrier Estate. Nowdays, runs various courses including a Facilitation Skills Professionals and Parents enabling participants to become qualified parenting courses facilitators, Food Hygiene courses and Parenting Programme. From one year and a half ago they are organising the Parent Support Forum.

100 Verses for 3 Estates is a new artwork for Kings Norton 3 Estates using the form of a shared writing schema called a hyakuin (100 verse Japanese renga). Over a period of 4 seasons artists Alec Finlay and Gavin Wade along with residents of the 3 Estates will produce 100 verses in 6 different places, providing a new tool for considering the future of the estates, its inhabitants, its identity, its visions. The work will produce a book of the hundred verses with a dictionary of the 3 Estates and this will be supported by a series of poster-works emerging from each stage of the artwork and a film of 100 residents of the Kings Norton Estates reading the 100 verses in 100 different locations.

The masterplan for Leidsche Rijn Utrecht was completed in 1997. By 2007, the town, still only half-complete had accumulated over 15,000 residents, make-shift supermarkets, plenty of primary schools and a Leidsche Rijn anthem. Built on agricultural land, numerous archeological sites and incorporating two existing villages (Vleuten and De Meern), Leidsche Rijn Utrecht was not merely a suburb but the largest ‘new’ town ever to be built in the Netherlands

Het Reservaat was an open air one-day museum of life in 2007. The artists worked to creat a snapshot of 2007 and convince the residents of Leidsche Rijn they were travelling back in time from 3007 to 2007. The idea was to look again at today with fresh eyes, like travelling in a time machine from the future back to the present. Visitors could experience strange spectacles such as local politicians discussing the meaning of democracy in 2007, rare sightings of elderly people playing board games and Dutch residents practicing an ancient art called Tai Chi in amongst the trees while the infamous (local teenage) rock band EitherWay screeched up to a stage in a bright orange jeep and performed their four song repertoire every hour, among lots of other strange goings on...

In the Docklands during the 80’s started a process of re-developing the area, that were not only docks and warehouses, was also home and workplace to 56,000 people. It was a classic top-down regeneration project in deprived areas that did not take into account people’s life and desires.
The artists were already working closely with local trades unions and were approached to produce a poster to inform local people about the regeneration process. What started as a process of consultation and information ended up in a bigger poster were the community could display their proposals, document the process, promote their campaigns and look at key issues such as housing. From this point community started to organize themselves to face this process and be able to participate form it and made their voices heard. The artists helped them to organize creating a steering committee that met regularly to report on local developments and agreed issues.

They commission leading artists, writers and thinkers to develop webcast content collaboratively with the tenants. And the projects explore social and social housing issues such as anti-social behaviour, care, money, smart homes, the paranormal, ethical banking, regeneration, the Welsh Streets, high-rise nightmares, CCTV and healthy eating. During its life tenantspin has created over 600 hours of Community TV programming which has been seen across the world as well as by the local community in Liverpool.

Bata-ville is a record of an English coach trip to the origins of the Bata shoe empire – the Moravian town of Zlin. The project involved the communities and employees that were involve in the backdrop of economic regeneration in the areas where two UK Bata factories were closed and was led by artist / directors Pope & Guthrie on a unique journey through Bata’s legacy and across a changing Europe. The project began as a free holiday and ended up as an opportunity for a collective to imagined what Tomas Bata’s inspiration idea of “We are not afraid of the future” can mean in 21^st century Britain.

Work in groups or individually.

Create a physical document that can be wall mounted (poster / series of posters / installation) that illustrates your proposal for a hypothetical community art project to take place on the Ferrier Estate. You will exhibit your proposals at the public event on 1^st March in the old bank on Telleman Square to residents of the Estate, local press and invited guests from Greenwich Council, Berkley Homes and the wider arts community. This will also be an opportunity for you to get feedback for your project which is your responsibility to collect and feed into your proposals for its final assessment.

To consider for inclusion in your presentation on 8th March:

Demonstrate you have an understanding of the context / site in which your project will take place. What is it that interests you about working on the Ferrier, what is your starting point? Are there any specific people, places and /or issues you want to work with (and why)?

Demonstrate you have spoken to people who live and /or work in the area – find out what their issues / ideas are.

Clearly illustrate/describe your proposal:

- What do you want to do?

- Why do you want to do it?

What is it that makes your project community art?

Who will be involved? Who is the project for?

How will you involve people?

What will local communities get out of your project?

How will you make it happen (what will the stages of developing the project be, who will you need to work with to realise the project)?

What do you want the after effects / legacy of your project to be? How will you evaluate it? What criteria will you use?

Also consider the visual impact of your presentation. You need it to communicate your ideas clearly to your audience.

4 groups

Group 1: marketing, publicity and front of house

Prep: Design a marketing campaign / communication strategy for Art for Kidbrooke. Think about where you should put fliers and posters, who should know about the event? How can you spread the word in the school and the wider area? How would you approach the press? What kind of information do people need? You are responsible for hosting and welcoming people on the day as front of house - think about how you want to do this (what will you wear, what will you distribute).

21st Nov: Distribute fliers and posters

24th Nov: You are responsible for hosting and welcoming people on the day as front of house, letting them know what's inside (eg. tehre will be food, the workshop, the exhibition). Help clear up at the end of the day.

Group 2: exhibition design and installation

Prep: Draw a plan of the space, consider all the different elements of the exhibition (Sophie to provide a list) and start to think about where things can go. Consider light and sound overlaps etc.

21st Nov: Work with Sophie, Isabel and Greg to clean the space and install the work. Work on preparing labels and information for visitors.

24th Nov: Talk to people about the work, explaining what is what, giving people info if they need it. Keep an eye on equipment and ask Group 3 for any technical support. Help clear up at the end of the day.

Group 3: technical support and documentation

Prep: Work with group 2 to consider what technical support is needed (sophie to provide a back-up list). Also consider how and what to document - you will be working with Rizz to podcast the event, think about both visuals and sound. What would you like to ask people about their experiences of past art projects and ideas for future projects? We would also like to set up a blog and put the documentation on there - is this something you can design?

21st Nov: Document the installation day (try and track each of the other groups and photograph / film their work)- this gives you a chance to test the equipment.

24th Nov: Work with Rizz to document the day - podcasting and recording, put documentation on the blog. Help clear up at the end of the day.

Group 4: workshop preparation and facilitation

Prep: An important part of the day will be the practical participation of the visitors in a hands on workshop which will invite people to consider ideas and plans for future community art projects linking with the new school. You are invited to work with interior architects, Greg Epps and Samson Adjei on this workshop. Plans are still being confirmed (I should know more by Friday!). You may want to think of some proposals yourselves to trigger others to think of some.

21st Nov: prepare materials for the workshop

24th Nov: You will be responsible for helping Greg and Samson, talking to guests about the new school and encouraging people to take part by contributing ideas and proposals. Help clear up at the end of the day.

1972 The Ferrier Estate was completed. It was designed by Sir Hubert Bennett of the GLC. Jacob Carter has done an interesting study (with images and models) of the estate.

1998 Thomas Tallis School was awarded joint specialist arts college status in partnership with Kidbrooke
School

1999 South Greenwich Regeneration Agency (SGRA) was formed to raise educational achievement and skills,
improve employment prospects, promote racial harmony and provide significant investment to improve
the housing stock and transport links to help create a stronger sense of community.

2000 Ferrier tenants and residents survey conducted by Gill Ackrill (Independent tenant advisor for the Ferrier
Estate)
SGRA begin the masterplan for the regeneration of Kidbrooke (Towards a Vision of the Kidbrooke
Development Area)

2001 Ferrier housing needs survey carried out by Gill Ackrill (Independent tenant advisor for the Ferrier Estate)
FRAG call for a ballot to confirm that the Coun cil has the consent of the Ferrier residents prior to

2006 Thomas Tallis School is re-designated as a single specialist arts college and Leading Edge school

Art for Kidbrooke exhibition and event

On Saturday 24 November we held an exhibition and event at the old bank on Telleman Square showcasing art activities on the Ferrier Estate from the past 20 years, such as the film Come Unity (2000) made by the Somali Women's Training and Development organisation and photos of the Chicago Free Street Theatre Company came to work with residents of the Ferrier in 1989. During the event photographer James Darling was doing a photo shoot - the portraits will be here to see soon; Greg Epps and Samson Adjei made a balloon grotto entrance and students from Thomas Tallis were documenting the day.
